What is Beryllium Copper?
Beryllium Copper is a bronze with beryllium as the main added element. It contains 1.7~2.5% beryllium and a small amount of nickel, chromium, titanium and other elements.
After quenching and aging treatment, the strength limit can reach 1250~1500MPa. close to the level of medium strength steel. In the quenched state plasticity is very good. It can be processed into a variety of semi-finished products.
Beryllium Copper has high hardness, elastic limit, fatigue limit and wear resistance. It also has good corrosion resistance, thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity. It is an ideal high conductivity and high strength elastic material.
The alloy can be heat-treated to strengthen. It does not produce sparks when impacted. Easy casting and pressure machining molding.
Widely used as important elastic components, wear-resistant parts and explosion-proof tools.
Categories of Beryllium Copper
1–By alloy composition.
- Conductive (electrical, thermal) beryllium bronze: beryllium content of 0.2% to 0.6%.
- High-strength beryllium bronze: beryllium content of 1.6% to 2.0%.
2–By manufacturing processing
- Beryllium Copper Casting
- CNC Machining Beryllium Copper
3- Grade
The internationally used beryllium copper alloy grades are headed by C.
Machined beryllium copper has two categories:
- C17000, C17200 (high-strength beryllium bronze)
- C17500 (high conductivity beryllium bronze).
The corresponding casting beryllium copper:
- C82000, C82200 (high conductivity cast beryllium copper)
- C82400, C82500, C82600, C82800 (high strength wear-resistant cast beryllium copper).
The world’s largest beryllium copper alloy manufacturer is the U.S. Brush Wellman Company. Its corporate standard corresponds to the international standard and has certain authority. China’s production of beryllium copper history is almost synchronized with the former Soviet Union, the United States. It included in the national standard grade only high-strength beryllium bronze QBe1.9, QBe2.0, QBe1.7.
Beryllium Copper Applications
- Electrical Engineering. wires, cables, transformers, motors, generators and other electrical equipment. Its superior electrical conductivity makes it ideal for high voltage and high current power delivery systems.
- Electronics. electronic components such as printed circuit boards, integrated circuits, microprocessors, capacitors and relays.
- Aerospace. engine parts, fuel injectors, valve brackets, aircraft housings and autopilot systems.
- Chemical Industry. chemical reactors, heaters, steam pipes. chemical catalysts, electroplating solutions, and surfacing agents.
- Automobile manufacturing, medical, construction and other fields. automobile wires and cables, medical instruments and construction materials.
- Mechanical applications. bearings, gears, screws, valves and hydraulic components.
- Shipbuilding. Beryllium copper is also widely used in the manufacture of ship parts.
- Construction Applications. roofing, piping and heat exchangers.
- Plastic Molds. plastic molds, pressure casting molds, precision casting molds, corrosion-type casting molds
Besides, beryllium copper is also used in the production of conductive elastic components and spring-sensitive components, sliding bearings and wear-resistant components. as well as safety and explosion-proof tools.
